The short version. Causeway has no accounts and no logins, and nothing stored about you can be traced back to you. Your results live in your own browser. One anonymous number - how long today's puzzle took - is sent to us so the game can tell you how you compare with everyone else. The only third party involved is the advertising network.
Causeway saves your progress using your browser's local storage, which is a small amount of data kept on your own device. It holds:
All of that stays on your device and we cannot read it. Clearing your browser data for this site erases it permanently, and there is no copy anywhere else. One separate thing is sent when you finish a puzzle, and it is not any of the above - it is described next.
When you finish a puzzle, three numbers are sent to our server so it can answer "how did I do against everyone else": which day it was, how many milliseconds you took, and how many hops you used. Nothing else. No name, no account, no cookie, no device id, no IP address is stored with it.
Because there is nothing identifying attached, these rows cannot be tied back to you, joined up across days, or used to build any kind of profile - by us or by anyone who obtained the data. They exist only to produce a count: of everyone who played that day, how many were slower than you.
If the request fails, or you are offline, or you block it, the game works exactly the same. You simply do not see the comparison line.
If site analytics are in use, they are Cloudflare Web Analytics, which is cookieless and does not fingerprint or identify individual visitors.
Causeway is free and is funded by advertising. When advertising is enabled, Google AdSense serves the ads.
Before any personalised advertising cookie is set, you are asked for consent through a Google-certified consent management platform. If you decline, ads are served in non-personalised form, which means they are based only on general context rather than on any profile. Declining does not restrict any part of the game. You can reopen that dialogue and change your answer at any time using the privacy or consent control shown with the ads.
Causeway is a word game with no age-restricted content, but it is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect any information from them.
If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it.
